MOUSE TEAM TOO POWERFUL PLZ NERF
Jul. 2nd, 2022 02:35 amThis is a post about opt-ins!
Because boy do I need a couple.
Catherine Foundling is not, technically, a god.
What she is, is a metanarratively cheating bastard, and basically the best there is at it short of the people the Gods of her setting literally put in charge of that job. She's an overpowered godmoding little shit. And how.
So: short version. Every Named has three Aspects that clarify and define their Role. Cat's Aspects are See, Silence, and Sentence. To be honest anything Silence and Sentence might need to be talked about for is already covered under the Player Comfort and Permissions sections everybody already filled out so I will ignore those and just discuss See because of how sharply it veers into potential "fourthwalling"-style metagaming without some sort of opt-in.
See is a passive Aspect, meaning counterintuitively it is to some degree always in action and only requires her to pay attention to it to make use of it, and it allows her to see the narrative of a person's life as it's unfolded and unfolding. See is not an Aspect that gives her the inherent power change that narrative through its use, but it allows her the ability, through seeing the story/ies that have defined a person to that point and the possibilities of where they might go, to use her own intuition and interpretive skill to apply what she learns to either push that in a direction she finds useful or ... not do that, if she chooses to let it ride.
In practical terms, it just makes her hard-learned ability to be a good judge of character into being a literal judge of someone's character - even without it, she's skilled at making quick reads on people, but it's only with it that she's more or less never wrong, and, more importantly, it's only with it that she doesn't need to actually figure out how people are connected to each other and whether they're being skilled liars about it to her face because she can, again, if she focuses on someone - for an example - literally See if you're in love with someone and don't know you are and beyond that at least partly why you don't want to admit that you are.
So, that's a lot of metagaming and I'm pretty sure you will want to let me know if See fully works on your character or if the snake god and/or her being in another world entirely is interfering with that somehow. So yes, please, for this one especially, chime in in the comments if you are okay with See having its full effect on your character.
Catherine also comes in empowered by Night, which is essentially godstuff given in permanent capacity to all the followers of the Evil religion (which I won't attempt to explain here) from whence it derives. (Yes, its Good counterpart is the Light.) This lets her do sick stunts like make stabby long sharp objects out of it, walk great distances in the dark totally unseen, have enhanced senses and strength beyond just the usual Named kit and caboodle if she wants, you know. Cool powers. (The obvious drawback is these abilities get weaker and harder to use in the daytime.)
Most of this isn't important because I say it isn't and it's not anymore egregious than, like, Gojo Satoru's Infinity or being a ORV Constellation. However.
One of the tricks that Cat can do with it is reach into someone's soul and steal a part of it and if it's narratively "solid" enough she can make a temporary Aspect out of it. How strong or weak it is depends entirely on how well-defined it is as a quality of the person she's essentially eating the soul of to get it, and if she eats it, that part of that person becomes ... less of a definitive part of who they are, after. It can restore itself over time, potentially, or by weakening it can falter and become something else. And it only has a limited utility for Cat, in turn: three uses, at most, with fewer uses the more weakly-definitive it is as part of who they are.
Basically she cheat speedruns the "hacking minigame from Bioshock" equivalent of a heartgame on someone and shakes them down for narrative cash and runs, leaving their psyche to resolve itself. And in a really tough and maybe life or death situation she can use this to acquire One Weird Trick, temporarily, for the high price of potentially shaking up someone else's entire perception of themselves for the rest of their life.
Hit me up in the comments if you are down to roll the dice and see what happens if she ever needs to do that to your character or anything, OK?
